What is the significance of the poppy being used as a symbol for this special memorial day?

It is planned to place these stunning red displays on World War One and World War Two memorials as a memorial to all those who lost their lives in both World Wars, but more significantly today in the massive loss of life our Armed Forces are experiencing in Iraq and Afghanistan.


During World War One, the Flanders and Picardy fields in Belgium and Northern France were completely destroyed, as was the rest of the country. It was the only flower to emerge from the mud of this war zone, and it was the poppy. However, because of its brilliant red color, it also served as a very poignant memorial to the carnage and bloodletting that occurred during these World War I battles, symbolizing the rebirth of life after death.


On November 11, 1921, the United Kingdom celebrated the first official Legion Poppy Day. Since then, the death and destruction experienced by the troops on those Flanders' fields during World War I has become an annual event to commemorate and reflect on by people of all ages and backgrounds throughout the United Kingdom.
